How often should I check brake lining thickness? Check lining thickness as a part of every pre-flight inspection.
Signs of brake lining wear
Reduced Brake Effectiveness
Do your brakes seem less responsive? This could be a sign of wear on the linings. Check the lining for minimum thickness.
Noisy Brakes
Do your brakes grind or squeal or is there any other unusual noise when brakes are applied? This could be another sign of lining wear or damage.
Visible Damage
Check for cracks, uneven wear or glazing on the linings. Replace the linings if you see any of these.
Increased Brake Temperature
This is harder to check for, but does it seem like the brakes are hotter than you normally expect after braking. The linings may not be dissipating heat properly and may need replacing.
Minimum brake lining thickness
Replace linings if less than .100”
For most general aviation applications, the Cleveland lining thickness gauge can be used for quick, routine checks. Be sure to check the requirements in your applicable manual.
